New Jersey is Working Towards an Accurate 2020 Census Count Wonderful news! The State of New Jersey has announced a grant program to support efforts to make sure that everyone - every age, race, ethnic group and immigration status - is counted in the 2020 Census. Qualifying non-profits and county governments need to apply to receive funds by October 31st. Applications for non-profits can be found here, and the one for county governments can be found here. The fund disbursement is expected to occur before the end of the year. These grants are focused on reaching hard-to-count populations, including children under five years of age. The 2010 Census missed 27,000 children under five years old for a variety of reasons - confusion over whether a child should be counted, lack of parent participation due to fear that the data will be shared, a belief that the Census questionnaire will take too long, and more. That undercount not only meant that New Jersey lost a Congressional seat and received less federal representation - it also meant that we missed out on vital federal dollars for ten years. |
