TAKE ACTION
The first three years of a baby’s life shape all the rest. During this time, a baby’s brain grows faster than at any later point in life, forming more than one million new neural connections every second. Positive interactions during this time of rapid brain development can impact a baby’s future social and emotional development and help them thrive as adults. Negative experiences can have a harmful impact on a baby’s growing brain and their emotional health.
Evidence-based voluntary home visitation programs help build healthy environments for young children by promoting infant and child health, nurturing positive parent-child relationships and connecting families to essential resources and supports. Home visitation programs are available in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties, reaching approximately 7,000 eligible families annually.
Unfortunately, the existing funding is not adequate to reach all families that could benefit from home visitation services. The rising costs of providing services, coupled with stagnant funding over the past decade, poses a threat to the long-term stability of New Jersey’s home visitation system and prevents programs from serving additional families.
Every day, legislators make decisions that impact the lives of babies in our communities. We need to make babies a priority by providing families with support during pregnancy and throughout their child’s first years. Parenting is hard, and having someone who can help accelerate learning and provide valuable child-rearing information reaps significant benefits for all children in our state.
Ask your legislators to commit to fighting for increased funding to sustain and expand home visitation services in New Jersey to reach more families.
The future begins with babies. Let’s invest in babies and our future! These policy changes will yield significant benefits for families and children during a very critical period in their lives. Our future literally depends on it. Send a message to your legislator today.
