Quarterly E-News
June 2020

Advocates for Children of New Jersey has been busy since our last e-news update. The COVID-19 pandemic has rocked the world, forcing us to reimagine how we interact and how our children learn. The tragic death of George Floyd and countless others has inspired a global movement for racial justice. And the importance of quality child care to families and the economy has been thrust into the forefront as conversations about reopening the state continue.

We are still informing families how to speak up for their children as they face the challenges of remote learning. We continue to advocate for a complete count in the 2020 Census. And through it all, we will continue to deliver information and sound policy recommendations, working together to give every child a chance. Don't miss out on our latest efforts related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Report - Unlocking Potential: A Roadmap to Making New Jersey the Safest, Healthiest and Most Supportive Place to Give Birth and Raise a Family

ACNJ's latest report is based on the belief that we all have a role to play in achieving equity and that supporting equal opportunities at the start of a child’s life is the first step in eliminating disparities that impact outcomes for babies, families and communities. Pritzker Children’s Initiative Director Gerry Cobb and a panelist of experts will be speaking on Wednesday, June 24th, 10:00 AM, taking a deep dive into the data and exploring ways we can make New Jersey a better state for children. Effectively Reopening Child Care in New Jersey Amidst the Challenges of COVID-19

When Governor Murphy closed the state, Advocates for Children of New Jersey stepped forward to be a voice for the child care sector. Child care, like schools, needed to close for the health of the children, and for the people caring for them. However, without continued support, New Jersey would face detrimental losses in the child care industry as a result of the shutdown.

Now that the economy and child care have started to reopen, we are ensuring the state knows that this fragile yet vital infrastructure cannot fail, calling for increased assistance so that our children care receive quality care while their parents go back to work. Read our recommendations.

Out Now - State of Babies Yearbook: 2020

On June 11th, our national partners at ZERO TO THREE virtually released their annual State of Babies Yearbook. This report and advocacy tool shows that the state where a baby is born impacts their chance for a strong start in life. By nearly every measure across all states, children living in poverty and children of color face the biggest obstacles, such as low birthweight, unstable housing, and limited access to quality early learning experiences. The report further highlights major disparities that begin before birth, especially for Black children, driven by systemic racism and social injustices.
